I got Gormenghast for the same (LOTR adjacent) reason, but I was older and it worked for me. I’ve read it again and again, and the first two volumes are, I think, magnificent, and the third is insane and, ultimately, heartbreaking.

On the 18th we need to be vigilant for increased violence and provocation by both law enforcement and counter-protestors, both of which will be used to try to justify more violence and authoritarianism.
