04.11.2025 13:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The Nero Wolfe series from 2001/2 had a core set of characters played by the same actors. And then a whole set of other actors play different parts for each episode!
A little jarring at first if you binge watch but they do a good job of making the characters distinct enough.
Not surprised at that outcome.
61 flight hours over 2 months is frequent enough for any developing faults to be spotted early.
Sudden failures are more likely to happen immediately after servicing. If you are the first pilot in a plane after servicing then you check EVERYTHING.
Allowing passengers to board/alight with the engine running is not something you would typically do and you certainly wouldn't do it with children or anyone unfamiliar with airplanes
So this does speak to a degree of carelessness. Is this how the pilot normally operated, or was this a deviation?
Not ensuring your passengers are buckled in and failing to brief them on how to release it as well as telling them what to not touch is asking for trouble.
Flying a cub with the windows fully open is normal, that's the 'air conditioning', but only if you are strapped in!
A cold engine dying out after the first start is not uncommon. Turning the prop by hand helps get oil into and out of places in the engine.
Just don't for get to check that the magnetos are isolated first or the engine might start!
Did the pilot forget this step when preparing the plane for flight
Pilot incapacitation, with the passenger attempting to pull the plane in line with the runway when that opportunity was presented to them is my leading theory.
02.11.2025 16:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The plane had also been flying many trips already that day and any clogging of fuel lines from particulates would have presented gradually.
I also do not think the pilot would have tried for the runway from that low. The road was right there and they had the option of either direction.
Fuel starvation is unlikely. The fuel display on a cub is a stick attached to a bob in the fuel tank that pokes through the top of the engine cowling. Can't miss it.
Fuel contamination with water is also unlikely as fuel is gravity fed from the tank and water would sit at the bottom.
I think he was correct to do so. There are other causes for the engine to die.
- Fuel starvation/contamination
- Pilot medical episode leading to a movement of the fuel mix/cut-off lever
- Passenger movement of the fuel mix/cut-off (dual control)
Combined with the map this has the hallmarks of an 'impossible turn' after engine failure during take off/climb out.
In trying to make the runway, it suggests they caused an accelerated stall of the right wing leading to the excessive wing drop and spiralling flight path.
I too was intrigued and my searches only found the news clippings that you clipped on newspapers.com (username a giveaway)
One of them had a witness state that the engine spluttered after take off and the plane landed on a wing and cartwheeled 3 times.

They made a copy of a human tool. This is their first constructed tool, but they can't use it. It's not for cows! So they then made tools for cows.
How do they work? I don't know, they're cow tools.
