Especially then. I delight in dehumanizing them. But we live in a world where directness, especially from a Black woman, gets pathologized. Where clarity feels like violence to people used to being coddled. Where a sentence without fluff, footnotes, or flattery must mean you're full of wrath. Not every sharp sentence is forged in rage, or in any emotion at all, really. What some folks feel as "anger" is often just the absence of sugar. The absence of apology. The absence of that familiar linguistic massage that makes hard truths easier to swallow. People don't know where to place it, so they call it anger. They come on my page like, "Whew, l'd hate to piss you off." I'm not angry. I'm just no longer interested in writing like people deserve the comfort of some Mammy titties. You don't have to be angry to write like a blade. Some of the sharpest cuts come from calm, dainty hands.
