I like that you were specific to ensure no one thinks you're including "the continuing story" on this one. 🀣

On this day that supports inclusive futures for women and girls in science, let's not forget all the women that were sidelined, ignored, or forced out of science because they:
- had children
- prioritised family/caring
- did science differently
- questioned boundaries & norms
- fought the patriarchy

Wasn't health supposed to be a big priority for this government?

I don't think they're suggesting this is the world's first genius cow (or that most of us who work with cows are "reassessing" anything - just pleased to have new support for our views of cow intelligence) πŸ˜†

Why the Do Nothing Challenge Doesn’t Do Much for You Why the Do Nothing Challenge Doesn’t Do Much for You: Boredom lab researcher James Danckert says our collective obsession is misplaced.

Really nice clear explanations of why boredom is still a problem in our times and why a one-time "do nothing for 8 hours" isn't going to fix it from @jamesdanckert.bsky.social here:

Sometimes peer reviews hurt my feelings, so journals should just stop doing them and publish my work no questions asked.

Did you push back at all on the effectiveness of urgent communication that way? It used to work but now you need to be logged into an X account or else what it shows when you look at e.g. HPL on X is a post from 6 years ago - so it's not even serving the purpose they say it is.

A big opportunity for researchers thinking about what’s next. Dalhousie University is recruiting up to 30 tenure and tenure-track faculty supported by the Canada Global Impact+ Research Talent Initiative. Strong support, big ambition.

Apply by Jan 23: buff.ly/tfhDaUS

I had the same thing, a "review request retracted" came in on Dec. 26th because I had not responded within a week... really wish these journal systems let the editors set dates that no reminders or retractions should happen.

Personally, I think a country having a history of harming people doesn't mean they should not try to be humane and kind in the present. Growth and learning is also part of being human. www.saltwire.com/nova-scotia/...

This article suggests the possibility of training AI on pre-existing proposals and their review reports, scores and related decisions. I.e. training them on a system which is known to preferentially award larger amounts of money to white men. What could possibly go wrong?

To Get a Man’s Attention, Meow Harder

New research reports that cats meow more frequently when greeting male owners. It’s hypothesized that men β€œrequire more explicit vocalizations to notice and respond to the needs of their cats.” In other words, the researchers are suggesting that many cats have concluded that men don’t always listen
