The other day for the first time I heard Gabe ranting about how something was "not fair!" ... Are we SURE I didn't get tricked into adopting a human toddler?

That is precious. Definitely prettier than what this caddisfly larva we found today made. He did make it his own little self, though.

Ant infected with Ophiocordyceps fungus.
Non-biting midgefly larva, ("bloodworm", a favorite darter snack).
Cranefly larva looking extra gnarly.
Great day for a stream macroinvertebrate biodiversity survey in the Ecology class. Case-building caddisflies, zombie ants, and my first Northern Flicker (Yellowhammer, the Alabama state bird).

I found a zombie ant! This poor little cuss is hanging from the twig it was compelled to climb after being infected. You can see the fungus (Ophiocordyceps) sprouting from its head in the characteristic long spike. Yep, you heard "cordyceps", as in The Last of Us. π§ββοΈ

It is Bedtime for Birds and I am strictly enforcing this, so now Gabe is sulking in the dark and grumbling about "That Woman." π It's like caring for a toddler and a little old man at the same time.
24.01.2026 02:07 β π 9 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0I'm in Alabama. My in-laws keep a bunch of them as a hobby, and theirs all bloom at Christmas, like clockwork. I guess I ended up with the rebellious one.π
