Because you are not doing the cognitive work of reading and understanding the edges of your subject and tangential but important contextual information. You are not learning what are useful and less useful sources. You are not learning to follow information trails yourself.

Those stories about Washington's troops marching in rags and nearly starving to death happened in part b/c industry & agriculture was so thoroughly disrupted, plus no one could earn or pay any money so the economy was at a near-standstill. Not b/c it they didn't know not to starve and freeze.

You've gotten good answers by now, but I wanted to note that there's a difference between "has a 'handle' plus a userpic and bio even if they're not giving personal details" vs. "has the auto-assigned icon, has not created a 'handle' or filled out bio at all." The latter are more likely bad actors.
