Home of my thoughts about archaic maps and mappae mundi, reconstructions and snaps people have taken of them, and my own redrawings. Third party stuff is believed to be in public domain. Copyright applies to own work.

I just love these sorts of reconstructions. Thanks for sharing. Gives people with less knowledge like me the opportunity to see how these people lived.
Also hidden from view is the enormous amount of work involved in depicting every detail.
And the evocative recreation of the main entrance of #Llanmelin hillfort by the brilliant #AlanSorrell. Dated 1940 the painting is owned and curated by @Museum_Cardiff

My photo shows an ornate golden helmet on display in a museum case. It is a reconstruction of an Anglo-Saxon helmet which was decorated with gilded silver sheets embossed with designs of warriors and animals. It has decorated cheek guards, a nose guard, and a long red horsehair plume running from back to front over the top of the helmet.
The Staffordshire Hoard helmet.
A helmet fit for a king!
This reproduction is based on helmet fragments from the Anglo-Saxon Staffordshire Hoard. It shows how it might have looked when it was made around 1,400 years ago.

A hillside with two large standing stones overlooking a waterway with a large metal bridge crossing it
#StandingStoneSunday During construction of this bridge "a causeway of ancient origins but unknown age" was discovered underwater
Could that be the ancient route used by Neolithic peoples to reach this stone circle?

08.02.2026 11:20 β π 138 π 31 π¬ 8 π 0A Roman road, constructed of large blocks of stone, is seen running to back of photo, with a twist to the left around a building that once stood on the right. This is Via Traiana, the route from Rome to Brindisi. On left are remains of buildings and columns that surrounded a large marketplace. Beyond marketplace is a hill - this is on the sea, and has remains from c. 13th C BC of Bronze Age/Messapian cultures. Further along Roman road can be seen a modern covering, which extends over former baths. The site is some 40 hectares and still being excavated.
Urban #RomanSiteSaturday of Egnazia in #Puglia was key point on Trajan's new Via Appia branch 109-114 AD, a quicker route to Adriatic ports.
But Via Traiana bit wonky as ran through existing #Roman 2C BC town, itself built over Messapian site begun 6C BC.
Here Traiana passes marketplace on left. πΊ
The transcript of the MN hearing where an AUSA said βThis job sucksβ is remarkable for more reasons than that. Itβs a searing portrait of a crisis perpetrated by depraved & oblivious high-level officials. Read it all. ...

Are some sensitive folks worried about cultural appropriation, maybe?
Another question I have is how Homer's description of Ariadne's outdoor dance platform fits with the minotaur story. Homer may have been aware of a version of Ariadne's tale that explained how the two are connected. But alas, I believe there is no record of it.

04.02.2026 11:12 β π 23 π 1 π¬ 4 π 0Getting too speculative, but I suppose a dance involving a ribbon or thread might have preserved a memory of Ariadne's role in the story. But the mythological version of the tale of Theseus and the minotaur clearly requires a multicursal maze.

04.02.2026 10:44 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Poor old Ariadne lost her role in labyrinth design long before this mosaic maze was constructed. For me, the interesting question is why that happened. π
Probably didn't communicate my interest well. Have thought about this question for a while.
