Not sure if this is an accomplishment or not, but you know what, I'll take it

Coming in late, but it was so bad I feel compelled to comment: Star Ocean: The Last Hope. Grating characters, bad writing, boring combat, tons of palette swapped enemies, and an ending boss sequence that feels like a fuck you. There's things I enjoy about it, but my god, what a heap of shit.

48 Hour Film Project A fast-paced weekend in which teams compete to create the best short film in only 48 hours, using required elements. The films premiere atΒ aΒ localΒ cinema.

I've participated in this the last few years, and it's a pretty fun but low stakes way to get into filmmaking. Worth a glance.

I read it for the first time last year, and as you suggested in another reply, it does feel oddly prescient w/r/t "the omnicrisis". I would say it's worth a shot, but feel free to drop out when it stops being fun.

Glad to see that AI is finding ways to innovate in the art space. They've moved from the "piss filter" to a "fully immersed in piss" effect.

Learned about "37U football" today and critically misread it as "37-and-up". For about 10 minutes I was utterly mortified and really confused about how these games last more than 5 snaps.

Entirely possible that my plangent cries about the impossibility of rebelling against an aura that promotes and attenuates all rebellion says more about my residency inside that aura, my own lack of vision, than it does about any exhaustion of U.S. fiction's possibilities. The next real literary "rebels" in this country might well emerge as some weird bunch of "anti-rebels," born oglers who dare to back away from ironic watching, who have the childish gall actually to endorse single-entendre values. Who treat old untrendy human troubles and emotions in U.S. life with reverence and conviction. Who eschew self-consciousness and fatigue. These anti-rebels would be outdated, of course, before they even started. Too sincere. Clearly repressed. Backward, quaint, naive, anachronistic. Maybe that'll be the point, why they'll be the next real rebels. Real rebels, as far as I can see, risk things. Risk disapproval. The old postmodern insurgents risked the gasp and squeal: shock, disgust, outrage, censorship, accusations of socialism, anarchism, nihilism. The new rebels might be the ones willing to risk the yawn, the rolled eyes, the cool smile, the nudged ribs, the parody of gifted ironists, the "How banal." Accusations of sentimentality, melodrama. Credulity. Willingness to be suckered by a world of lurkers and starers who fear gaze and ridicule above imprisonment without law.

I started reading David Foster Wallace's work because of his 1993 paper about irony and sincerity. I think the last paragraph echoes what you're saying quite closely. Sad to still be grappling with the same problem 30 years on, but I guess that speaks to the magnitude of the issue.

It's easy; you spend a bunch of money on expensive cardboard, spend an hour sleeving them, spend another hour shuffling them, mulligan 4 times to get a playable hand, and then lose on turn 6 to your friend that swears his deck is only a bracket 3.
