Just got word from my college roommate - who is the state archivist for the state of South Dakota - that due to the DOGE shutdowns of IMLS, they can no longer fund InterLibrary Loan in SD.

This means exchange between libraries, ability to get books delivered across the system, is gone as of 4/30.

Someone I know drove around for years with a Promise Keepers bumper sticker on his car that just said “I love my wife”. It always made me sad for everyone involved to think about what the PK movement was giving him that he couldn’t find anywhere else in his life. How lost he must have been. And is.

They might want to mention the utter fraudulence of his entire movement a bit earlier in the piece, rather than leaving it for the end that no one reads all the way to, but it certainly did close on a strong note of contempt. I guess they figure everyone knows it ends this way 🤷

I feel the loss so acutely, Ashley. Not because it can’t be replaced, but because its end reminds me of the inexorable destination of so many good things that draw the attention of people who can’t seem to tolerate the joy of others.

It’s hard to imagine that the people who destroyed it aren’t going to do the same thing to our country and our culture. Here’s hoping we can be like the mammals that survived the K-T extinction and adapt our way into a new, better glorious world.
