Lovely day for the Avenues walk and writing workshop with Lyn Lockwood and Jane Bluett. The Avenues and Pearson Park looked splendid in the autumn sunshine, and Jane's writing guidance produced all kinds of fascinating responses to Larkin. Thank you to all our attendees and the excellent Artlink.

Sad to see the passing of Dickie Bird. I once met him on a train heading out of London after a meeting at Lord’s. He told me he couldn’t wait to get home to Barnsley; also that Richard Hadley was the best all round cricketer he’d come across.

Thanks Luna. I should say that two poems particularly resonated, both by Helen Dunmore, who came from Beverley - β€˜To my nine year old self’ and β€˜I Have Been Thinking of You so Loudly’.

No doubt as an avid listener he would have been amused by having his poetry quoted in an episode last year

Today marks the birthday in 1913 of one of Larkin's favourite writers, and personal friend, novelist Barbara Pym. Pym was born in Oswestry in Shropshire, and a blue plaque dedicated to her can be found there.

And now this stride into our solitude,
A swallow-fall and rise of one plain line,
A giant step for ever to include
All our dear landscape in a new design.
