We used to keep cheap Xmas decorations in tins in the loft. The acetate/cellulose smell is exactly the same as some old tape reels! Every time I work on tape it feels like Xmas in more ways than one.

My last album had a lot of fun but nasty stuff going on with degrading tape loops, some granular stuff etc. Taylor Deupree did an insane job keeping it all in check. Hell of a mastering engineer!

Completely. Plus as it’s always shifting, picking grains from all over the place, it’s messing with phase coherence so becomes smeary and loses focus in context of a full mix. I bet mastering engineers hate it!

I think in my head I want it to be this evolving, shifting ethereal beautiful thing. Wavetable do this better to my ear 90% of the time, unless the granular texture is the main thing.

Hope you don’t mind me popping up with a take! I think it suffers a lot from the fact it’s nearly always stereo. Precisely because as you said, that sounds ace on its own, but it just gets lost in a mix as it doesn’t often have a defined ‘place’. I found better results by only using mono sources

Listened to the pod this afternoon, splendid work! Very interesting. I’ve long thought that complaint rang hollow. But the point about not spending wisely is spot on. Too much flip flopping and too many bad calls prior to the last couple of years.

Honestly it’s brilliant. I’ve got a decent-sized modular system and this could easily replace most of it for many tasks. I bought it for a sound design / scoring job but I’ve not got round to putting any sounds down as yet as it’s just too fun to mess around with!

This tiny thing from Instruo is absolutely unreal. Like a Buchla Easel you can fit in your back pocket, and with full patch recall and control from computer. Game changer for scoring work I think.
