A man wearing a respirator stands with his arms folded across his chest. He is in a room with various convenience store stock items, like soda cans, etc. The text reads, “Letter to the editors: Concerns about California’s right-to-mask bill. Written by David Miller.”
No one should have to remove their masks “for identification purposes” or otherwise, temporarily or not, at most of those places. And if it’s not already required by law, such policies definitely shouldn’t be codified into law.
In May, The Sick Times published an op-ed about a novel bill in Illinois that would enshrine the right to wear medical masks into that state’s law. We received a letter from a reader in California, sharing concerns about the right-to-mask bill currently pending in that state. bit.ly/481168l

Opinion | Stop Acting Like This Is Normal
“It’s been six months since Schumer decided that it wasn’t the time for a fight. … Democratic leaders have had six months to come up with a plan.” There is no plan now but to hope for a clean CR.
Klein is right: Dem leaders need to act like this is not normal. The fight drives the comms.

I inserted myself into a conversation at a bar about Covid and vaccines. Here’s what happened
What happened when a public health scientist overheard four men sharing misinformation about Covid — and decided to talk to them about it.
This is a great piece by @unbiasedscipod.bsky.social with helpful tips for addressing COVID misinformation.
As a science communicator, my experience is that the best way to win people over is with empathetic real world conversations and it's work we all need to do if we want to turn things around.

This notice provides guidance from the Massachusetts Division of Insurance (DOI) and Department of Public Health (DPH) to Carriers about Massachusetts guidelines for vaccines, and to clarify the DOI’s expectations regarding coverage for vaccines within Massachusetts-issued insured health plans. Under the provisions of M.G.L. c. 176O, §6(a), and the DOI regulation for Managed Care Protections and Accreditation of Carriers, 211 CMR 52.00, in 211 CMR 52.13, Carriers are expected to provide clear explanations within Evidence of Coverage materials to persons covered within Massachusetts-issued insured health plans about benefits for vaccines. The DOI also expects other Carrier communication materials to impart clear information about vaccine coverage.
Coverage for Vaccines
Carriers are expected to provide coverage for all vaccines and the cost to administer vaccines, without cost-sharing and without the use of any utilization management, for persons covered under Massachusetts-issued insured health plans who satisfy the recommended guidelines established by DPH for the provision of immunizations in Massachusetts. Carriers are expected to update all Evidences of Coverage in accordance with 211 CMR 52.13, and to make clear in all online information how eligible persons may access covered benefits for vaccines.
Carrier products with prescription drug formularies may limit access to vaccines to those specified on their plan formularies, provided that there is at least one product on the plan formulary that will address each item on the DPH recommended guidelines for vaccines. Health plans that offer non-emergency coverage through a closed network of providers may limit access to those health care practitioners or pharmacies that are part of their closed networks.
Massachusetts is outdoing other states because they are the first to require insurers to cover the cost of COVID shots and other vaccines recommended by state health officials.
Vaccines are not accessible if they are unaffordable. Every state needs to follow their lead!

RFK Jr. rolled out that old chestnut again about how healthy Americans were in the 60’s, so here’s a fact check.
In 1965:
-42% of American adults smoked; it’s 11% now.
-The infant morality rate was 24.7/1000; it’s 5.6/1000 now.
-Overall life expectancy was 70 years; it's about 77 years now.

Top FDA official demands removal of YouTube videos in which he criticized Covid vaccines
Channel was an attempt to ‘preserve’ what Trump officials in current Trump administration said during the pandemic
“Prasad’s comments still appeared on anti-vaccine social media accounts, suggesting Prasad was directing his removal demand only at a critic and not anti-vaccine influencers. In the past, Prasad has complained about censorship by social media companies.”
Yeah, cause he is an antivaxxer and a fraud.
