The Mathematicians' Library: The Books That Unlocked The Power Of Numbers (Liber Historica)
Whilst I'd definitely recommend buying it in its physical form (it's truly lovely) and not from Am*z*n, it'd be remiss of me not to mention that the Kindle edition of The Mathematicians' Library is currently on sale for a cracking ยฃ5.99: amzn.to/3WHq8Ct

Been thinking more about addition. Plus in Latin means 'more' or 'greater in amount'. Also, from Old French surplus (sur = โoverโ + plus = โmoreโ). So the first encounter of addition as an idea, both for children and humanity is 'counting on' which you mentioned in your post.

Fun fact. The Latin word et means 'and' in English. The t of the et became the plus (+) symbol in mathematics. Another evolution of the same et became the ornamental ampersand (&) symbol.

Don Steward algebra task with all answers 9n
Yesterday I spoke about patterns in Don Steward's answers at #mathsconf39. Coincidentally I was revising with my Y7 daughter this morning (she has a test tomorrow) & gave her two of Don's algebra pyramids. She was delighted to get the same answer twice so I checked the rest... :)

Beauty Is Suffering [Part 1 - The Mathematician]
In #MathsToday I assured my tutee that being frustrated, stuck and not knowing where to start when faced with a question is perfectly normal. It is this productive suffering that opens up to enlightenment. We saw the classic Andrew Wiles video. Embrace the struggle! www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0UT...

Mathematical conventions must be explicitly taught, but mathematical ideas can be discovered or deduced.โ
Dave Hewitt refers to these as arbitrary and necessary.
A couple of tasks to bring about awareness of the properties of odd and even numbers.
Arbitrary and necessary mathematics.
One of those most important ideas to consider when planning and delivering maths lessons.
Here's my one-slide summary based on Dave Hewitt's article here:
