Final session involved looking at lots of data from Edexcel with @justmaths.bsky.social.
Looking at which topics prevent students from moving to the next grade. Similar triangles came up SO much!

Beautiful surds questions with @mathsjem.bsky.social - really like the fourth, where students need to simplify before they rationalise.

Place value fun with @mrtaylormaths2.bsky.social - looking at how we can show decimal and percentage equivalents.

Great ideas for enrichment activities with @stephenfroggatt.bsky.social - looking at how to quickly find the day of important dates in history.

Really enjoyed yesterday’s #mathsconf38 - from quickly calculating dates in a different century to the most gorgeous surd questions, I’ve had lots to think about!
Best of all, it was great to see everyone - especially at an Ormiston School 💕.

To introduce logarithmic scales with #CoreMaths, we looked at this graph from @jburnmurdoch.ft.com, and then at his explanation for the scale. I really like this example of a log scale in the wild! #MathsToday

Started indices in Y8 #MathsToday.

Our previous topic was sequences, so we began by comparing two that I’d made in a spreadsheet.

And then we moved onto power tables, using the jumps method that I stole from @blatherwicksam.bsky.social. By the end of the lesson they were using fractional powers!

Y8 #MathsToday: we extended the tables downwards, and they pretty quickly realised they could use the numbers they could see in order to evaluate these. We even managed negative fractional indices!

Honestly this way of teaching indices is a game changer. Thanks @blatherwicksam.bsky.social

I’ve always taught surds in one unit, but I like the thought of breaking it up and having the complex stuff later. Lots to think about!

Absolutely. This helps with adding surds and connecting the link of like terms.
