I see this all the time with maths. People who were naturally good at school maths often fall over completely at university because they don’t know how to make sense of things that are difficult to them.

I think a pity here is that the derivative of tan is in our formula books, so it becomes the empirical result rather than one of the ways of displaying the results.

see also differentiating tan to get sec², why we don't use d/dx(tan x)=1+tan²x confuses me as it is a lot more aesthetically pleasing

Hmmmm, the sum of the first n squares being (1/24)(2n)(2n+1)(2n+2) is a lot prettier

First. The booklets are entirely the teacher's work copied down.

I use them for certain topics (transformations, vectors, some angles stuff), but in general no, because I find my teaching is more adaptive to needs of students at those key stages

We use them for A level. Huge gains on where we were before it.
