Someone spent $56 without my authorization ON CE4LESS?? Did a fellow social worker steal my debit card?? So baffling, initially assumed it was auto-billing a yearly subscription fee but the amount was wrong.

My life IS great though. I love my job, I have a great marriage, I have a nice apartment close to work and amenities, my cats are cute. I saw lots of birds on my hike today. But apparently this is not enough to stop my brain from chewing on itself like an itchy dog.

I'm so good at being like "why am I having a nervous breakdown? my life is great, I have nothing to worry about" meanwhile I didn't get the loan repayment grant I applied for, my husband is partially furloughed, our hot water was out for most of the week, and my debit card information was stolen.

Journalist challenge: Use β€œMachine Learning” when you mean machine learning and β€œLLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch β€œAI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. πŸ§ͺ

well, I read it, and the salient, non-gross part is Lizza alleging, midsentence and without elaboration, that Nuzzi ran numerous β€œcatch-and-kill operations” on RFK’s behalf, which would give her a role in both his appointment and the untold preventable deaths he has abetted in office. Cool.

My brain has been like a dog chewing on itself for the better part of three months and this Did Not Help, but at least I have a large and well-maintained regional parks system that I get to take a hike in this weekend.

the implicit standard of "criminality" is doing a lot of work here, mostly as a desperate appeal to avoid thinking (not grading any of your students' exams is not criminal behavior either but you can very quickly see how that might nevertheless put a professor's employment in jeopardy)

Excerpt from a BBC article: ""We usually work, 10, 11 or 12 hours a day," says a 49-year-old woman from Jiangxi unwilling to give her name. "On Sundays we work around three hours less."

She is in an alleyway, where a dozen people are huddled around a row of bulletin boards.

They are reading the job ads on the board, while examining the stitching on a pair of chinos draped over it.

This is Shein's supply chain. The factories are contracted to make clothes on order - some small, some big. If the chinos are a hit, orders will ramp up and so must production. Factories then hire temporary workers to meet the demand their permanent staff cannot fulfil.

The migrant worker from Jiangxi is looking for a short-term contract - and the chinos are an option.

"We earn so little. The cost of living is now so high," she says, adding that she hopes to make enough to send back to her two children who are living with their grandparents.

"We get paid per piece," she explains. "It depends how difficult the item is. Something simple like a t-shirt is one-two yuan [less than a dollar] per piece and I can make around a dozen in an hour.""

The people who make Shein's clothes labor for ten to twelve hours per day (in violation of China's labor laws), some up to seven days a week, and earn as little as 15 to 30 cents per t-shirt.

Important 🧡!

There's tons of research on this in school contexts (plus DV & cults as Sandy notes). The only programs that effectively address bullying 1) bolster community relationships & 2) provide explicit bystander training. Standing up to a bully/abuser runs counter to human survival instincts.

A lot of education discourse is at root an inability to decide whether the purpose of our education system is to 1) teach material and measure learning 2) reward students who work hard 3) separate the smart kids (destined for smart guy jobs) from the dumb kids (destined to serve the smart guys)

It's sort of a bummer to me that the reaction to the Epstein emails has basically been "kids are actually fair game to traffic after puberty" on the right and "LMFAO TRUMP MIGHT HAVE DONE GAY SHIT" on the left.

Put another way, I think people are more scared of drinking something that they think could kill anyone, versus experiencing a condition that they believe could never happen to themβ€”even though it very well could

Part of the reason I think there isn’t as much pressure around stopping ChatGPT re: suicide/psychosis as compared to stuff like Panera Lemonade is because people are inclined to blame it on mental illness versus the tech, a kind of victim-blaming mentality that fits neatly into just world fallacy

Pointless engagement bait/idle curiosity: If you believe that you were hotter at some point in the past than you are now: what was your hottest age? And if you believe your hottest days lie ahead of you, at what age do you think you will be at your hottest?

genuinely crazy-making how much the national press is indifferent to the verifiable fact that jd vance is buddy buddy with internet nazis, and the degree to which this is almost certainly a form of solidarity among people with a similar institution pedigree

Maybe the reason I haven't been able to kick this depression for the past two months is because I haven't observed the Depression Ritual of posting the Bo Burnham Feeling Like Shit Song. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJbR...

Sometimes when I feel overwhelmed by my present political and historical moment, I close my eyes and say to myself, "All throughout written history there has been enormous wealth and power concentrated in the hands of a few assholes and very little the average person could do about it."

Bigots in the tent What did you think winning meant? vibes? papers? essays? losers.

this feels completely banal? yes, a big tent political party is going to include voters who have bigoted views. i don’t think anyone has argued otherwise? the actual question at hand is β€œto what extent should a political party ostensibly committed to equality appeal to popular prejudices?”

And they were like "THANK YOU for clarifying that."

After a bit of chatting I was like, "hey, not even going to apologize for stereotyping you -- you look like you play board games. would you like to meet my husband? he has a great board game collection and he doesn't get to play as often as he'd like."

After about 30 minutes I had to pee, so I walked to a nearby Mexican restaurant and told them "hey, my building's on fire, can I use your bathroom?"
Then on my way back, I ran into and briefly chatted with a neighbor I had never met before who had a side shave and a Resting Witch Face t-shirt.

Maybe my first Story Time thread on Bluesky.

A little over an hour ago our building caught on fire. It was successfully confined to two apartments, about two floors above us, but we had to throw our cats in their carriers and decamp to the other building's courtyard for a little while.

This entire article uses the phrase "higher education" when what it actually means, contextually, is "business school."

I would love for more people to know and really process that "colleges and universities" are not a thing-- it is a complex, diverse, differentiated industry in which institutions have vastly different audiences, funding, even missions.
