In the background we see Sesame Streetβs Big Bird with a kiffiyeh scarf around his neck running to the left of frame holding a pole from which waves a black flag with a white antifascist symbol on it. In the foreground is a furry blue muppet with a bulbous pink nose who is otherwise unidentifiable because he has a black bandana around his mouth (itβs Grover) who is preparing to throw a Molotov cocktail. In the flames flowing from the rag in the neck of the bottle can be read the words βMaybe it will happen todayβ.

After a four-year investigation, a breakthrough study reveals the cause of sea star wasting disease (SSWD). A strain of the bacterium Vibrio pectenicida is the culprit behind the marine epidemic that has killed billions of sea stars since 2013. Read the study: πhttps://tinyurl.com/4rcb3xpf

04.08.2025 15:19 β π 3 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Sporty crow likes a trendy downward feather flurffle unbothered by posh pretensions of total coiffness. No, this hip crowster of today lets it all hang out with a chic blase attitude that tells the world "I'm free and I know it." With just a dash of fir tree pine-cone pinache. Oh yeah.
Every season there's the moody crow waddling down the runway, clutching a plank of wood like a corvid lumberjack. Burly, surly, off to bed early, this crow can bench press your mother and swallow large rats whole without even a second thought. That look around the eyes--that's the knowing look of a crow that knows who they are. Oh la la, that's sexy.
Goth crow doth hideth the head and frequent Dark Star Magick on the corner of Burnside and 8th, before ambling down to Grendel's Coffee House for a Bauhaus Special Blend. This is a feathery, leathery crow whose bashful side has a dark allure. Favorite author? Crowley, of course.
Crows about town dress up in their slick, tailored tuxes, black tie, cummerbund, and tails, of course. Maybe there's a little saucy Je ne sais quoi to their penchant for mimicking chimney sweeps and playing ring around the rosy, but these two cheeky champs couldn't be more serious about their fashion sense. Swank is back, baby.
Neighborhood crows strutting their stuff. More in the alt text on their lifestyles and fashion sense.

I host monthly events which touch on some of the weird venn overlaps of the course, and also a yearly retreat where people can get together and make things.
I've gotten very behind on my progress in this class, because life. But it is such a delight and I very much recommend it π¦

But also zines and postcards, musical scores, fun little web tools and animated explorations.
Binoculars to Binomials is very much about doing data differently.
This course really was lite changing! I now enjoy time outside looking for birds, at home & away... and I learned A LOT more on coding" #binocularstobinomials
"As a Data Scientist at Der Spiegel, I'm always looking for unique ways to tell stories through data. This course was exactly what I was looking for -a perfect mix of getting outdoors with creative data viz." #binocularstobinomials
Pretty much everyone who has taken this courseβ birders and coders and the generally curious βhas said that Binoculars to Binomials changed the way they thought about data, and the way they look at and consider nature.
And, it gets you outside!
This course is extremely unique, it's worth every penny and you really cannot get this anywhere else. It's such an adorable course and Jer is wonderful. I'd recommend this to anyone." #binocularstobinomials
Learn how to access and use rich sources of birding data including the eBird API, XenoCanto, The Christmas Bird Count historical database, and more.
Cultivate and enrich an observational practice (birding!), and explore how to apply the techniques from this practice to other parts of your life.
Binoculars to Binomials is an online course for coders who are interested in cultivating an observational practice, and for birders who want to dive into the rich pool of data that comes out of their hobby.

This is the piece I've been waiting for.
Captures exactly why Son is such a lighting-in-a-bottle player.
Screenshot from iNat showing the wide variety of biodiversity in Santa Marta, Colombia
My Binoculars to Binomials retreat in September is anchored around birds, but we'll be reminding ourselves every morning to expand our field of noticing to include frogs, salamanders, insects, plants and fungus!
iNat users have ID'ed 6,666 species nearby!

If Son does indeed go to LAFC I'll be one of a very many fans buying tickets to see him play every time I can.
While perhaps not at the scale of Messi, Son will sell rafts of tickets in every stadium LAFC plays in.

Son Heung-min
Having Son Heung-min at Spurs for the last decade has provided so many gifts.
Not the least of which is that my son has had the ideal role model for how to be a incredible competitor AND a truly good human being.
Thank you, Sonny.
