04.11.2025 04:49 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Looking for some spooky reads? The Enthusiast has some recs (no paywall). My choice was White Tears by @harikunzru.bsky.social , a furious, haunting read I havenβt stopped thinking about since I read it. open.substack.com/pub/theenthu...
23.10.2025 18:22 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Later the narrator says, βshe found that nothing offended her but cruelty.β Could be a coincidence, but Shklarβs ideas fit well with the themes of the novel. Maybe the nerds at @liberalcurrents.com or @jacobtlevy.bsky.social know if Iβm on the right track.
17.10.2025 20:47 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Right now Iβm reading The Fraud by @zadiesmith.bsky.social and Judith Shklarβs Ordinary Vices, and Iβm pretty sure Smith read Shklar! Eliza in the Fraud says βCruelty stands apart. In any degree cruelty is a crime. It is the very worst that we can doβ echoing Shklarβs βputting cruelty first.β
17.10.2025 20:30 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0My timeline is now full of other people posting about how they are similarly confused π. Must be a big list.
15.10.2025 20:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I just followed a Liberal Currents starter pack. Are you in that?
15.10.2025 20:43 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Urban trees can lower temps by up to 12Β°C, but itβs not just about quantity. Species, layout and local climate all play a role in how effective they are. Strategic planting leads to cooler streets, cleaner air and healthier communities, especially in neighborhoods vulnerable to rising temperatures.

Restoring mangroves = better shrimp + stronger climate resilience. Letβs farm smarter, not harder.

The first commit for the #rstats {tigris} package was 10 (!) years ago, and the package is still going strong.
tigris gets geographic data from the US Census Bureau into R for you -- often in a single line of code.
As tigris turns 10, let's review what it can do:
Adrian Tchaikovsky is terrific! Really loved Children of Time. Maybe favorite sci-fi and up there with Iain Banks for being full of ideas.
