If you remember the question and the response, I would be curious to know.

Thanks Landry! Also, this is an excellent distillation of perhaps the core issue in NatCon thinking, and why it is inimical to liberal democracy. I may write more about this soon.

If you want great in-depth analysis of why Hazony’s ideas boil down to blood and soil nationalism, I highly recommend the work of @paulmatzko.bsky.social and @akivamalamet.bsky.social in this thread.

If you’re guarding your heart, I can give you the Cliff’s Notes at @theunpopulist.net:

Highly recommended, and not because Aaron is a friend (or my multiple appearances). RL is an unusually deep, reflective, charitable, and wide ranging space for important conversations on the past, present, and future of a free and open society from the philosophical to the highly applied.

Listening to @ezraklein.bsky.social’s interview of Yoram Hazony and struck by the fact that Hazony isn’t just bad at nationalism; he’s also bad at understanding his faith. His scriptures are filled with outsiders being grafted into tribes by acts of faith and creedal commitment (e.g., Ruth, Rahab).

Hey Bluesky! Just started on here, hopeful for some good conversations. Sharing these replies on nationalism as a thread.

This dimension undermines the pure national group ontology of Hazony's understanding of Jewishness and maybe other groups too. But arguably so does most of nationalism studies, even Anthony Smith and primordialism.

One fascinating thing about Judaism is that it is an ethnic religion that you can convert to! It's especially easy in Bible stories compared to later history. I view Judaism as an "imagined community" ethno-religion, because converts become sanctified members whose children are considered Jewish.

I didn't mention stories like Rahab or Ruth, I emphasized dialectical principles and important universalist instincts in Jewish tradition broadly, but that's an excellent additional point!

I haven't listened to the interview, but this was my exact impression when I reviewed his book. www.libertarianism.org/columns/vice...
