wasn't this the main argument in favour of slavery - "if we have to pay our workers then our industry dies"?

Boo Hoo. If your business model relies on breaking the law then find something else to do.

Agree, but look at it this way. If the US returns to being a democracy, a future sane US Government can always ask for the King to return it and he probably would, and if the US continues its slide into fascism, the Eisenhower Museum probably ceases to exist.

I think it probably dates from a period where low cisterns were not in general use.

This ruling simply concerns a straightforward breach of a commercial contract.

We need a criminal investigation and prosecution. Not for faulty product but for the corruption at the heart of the VIP-lane. There are rules on procurement which were broken.

Any time people start talking about weakening protections for certain groups I am always reminded of this quote.

Scotland produces about 15% of Great Britain's renewable electricity consumption (roughly 15 TWh out of 100 TWh).

"British Isles" is a term probably best avoided and in any case NI and Ireland have their own grid and are best considered separately (although they are interconnected).

I read this graph as showing that the UK was still burning gas during those hours, but exporting an equivalent quantity of power. Is that right?

It is potentially dangerous to use multiple names for a common over the counter drug which is really easy to fatally overdose on because if you think that acetaminophen and Tylenol are different medicines you may carelessly decide to take a full dose of both.

Most medicine DOES only have a single generic name - the International non-proprietary name administered by the WHO. The problem is that a few rogue states - in the case of paracetamol that would be the US, Japan, Canada, Venezuela, Colombia and Iran - choose to go their own way.

Cervical cancer is the biggy because it kills so many people (at the moment - this will change), but the vaccine also reduces the risk of oral, and anal cancer and warts in both sexes, and penile cancer in men.

You don't need to be left-ish to be seen as such in today's climate. Your world-view simply need to be connected to reality in some way. "climate change is real", "gender is complex", "colonisation is a historical fact", "vaccines work" are all factual statements not political positions.

More to the point would be for Burnham to appoint a Chief Constable who gets it and is willing to accept responsibility for his force's actions.

"Britain and Ireland" (or "Ireland and Britain" if you are reading from left to right) serves most purposes as a geographical term.

The other alternatives (using the words "Atlantic" and/or "archipelago") I find too much of a mouthful and unfamiliar to too many people.

Not surprised. Banging on about freedom is completely different from doing the actual hard work of making it happen for everyone. America has always been very keen on the former, less so on the latter. It is what colonial powers do. The Romans and the Brits and the French did the same.

You are talking about AI (a subject you appear to have no special qualification in).

Whilst politics (a subject you do know about) is sliding down the pan in your country.

FFS Obama!

My prediction for the 2029 election is that it will be a straight fight in England between Greens (E+W) in some kind of pact with the Lib Dems versus Reform. It will be close and a hung parliament may give the SNP the power to demand an indyref as a condition of supporting a Green-led government.

They will not leave the ECHR, but they will bad-mouth it for sure. Thus satisfying absolutely no-one. The sane people will continue to be driven to the Greens and LibDems and the mouth-breathers to Reform,

Even putting the morality aside, how can they be so astoundingly shit at politics?

Israeli minister touts Gaza 'real estate bonanza', defying international backlash Bezalel Smotrich, an ultranationalist who has been sanctioned by the UK and others, said he was in discussion with the US over the idea.

History will judge Carney, but at the moment he seems to be doing better at a more difficult job than Starmer. Maybe Starmer will play a diplomatic blinder for Ukraine and all will be forgiven, but I am not currently impressed.

You realise of course that in saying we should have a non-political Eurovision, you have put forwards a political position, are making a political argument and are being political. There is no escaping politics.

Is she saying (as Barossa said before her) that Europe must have its own imperial ambitions because everyone else has them, or is she saying imperial ambitions are bad and Europe must reject that path?

Because Europe can do one or the other of those things but not both.

Β£250 must be an average amount. It will have cost some people more than that whilst others (those with shares in the private companies) will have benefited. It isn't the case that Β£250 of everyone's wealth has simply been destroyed. Rather it is once again about equality and wealth distribution.

It's all stratigraphy to this archaeologist. But then I am unable to walk along a patched-up pavement without trying to work out the order the different utilities dug it up in.

I'm of the opinion that the best thing to do about the mismatch is ignore it. Over time it will soften and you will stop noticing it in any case.

I was going to call Starmer an embarrassment, but the feeling I have with him as my Prime Minister is worse then mere embarrassment. It is deep shame. I get that the UK (and CA also) is uncomfortably intertwined with the US, but we should be steadily working on extricating ourselves from that.
