Hardly unusual though. It is the same spin Nissan used in Japan when opening their Sunderland factory and I don't think there are many who would deny that that factory has benefited both the UK and Japan.

You can spin inward investment either way. You could just as easily have said that China has allowed $15bn of its vital medicine manufacturing industry (and some of the profits arising therefrom) to be build and owned by UK companies. The reality is trade and investment is not a zero sum game.

GERS is certainly a funny beast. I get why Scots are suspicious of it because it was started by a UK Tory government with the (secret but leaked) aim of showing that Scotland took more than it contributed. Recently it has tended to show the opposite.

...the problem is that they do not need to win their cases to advance their prejudice. When then loose they simply ramp up the persecution complex.

That is because their cases do not arise from real issues just theoretical fears and prejudices ( "we don't like..." ) Real court cases usually start with a real aggrieved individual ("I was harmed...") and some real facts ("...and this is what happened") which a judge can get their teeth into.

The trouble is our common sense intuitive ideas of fairness and reasonable profit margins derive from how small businesses are run because we are familiar with them and we then try and apply them to big business where the ownership is separated from those who do the hard work.

The interest rate applied is still equal to the rate of inflation. High rates of interest were applied in this example precisely because we have had a high rate of inflation. The intergenerational unfairness arises because we had free tuition and grants, not because of how indexation works.

A supermarket chain that leased their stores that would show my point perfectly, because for that model to work most of the profit would the go to the shareholders of the landlords as return on their investment NOT to the supermarket as reward for shifting billions in goods to the public.
