Thank you so much! My wife and son also love Spy Family and we appreciate the response :)

You're right, *of course* Loid would know what kind of sounds dogs respond to. I think the whole set-up & multiple punchlines work so well because you kept the dialogue perfectly in character for Loid and Yor!

Do you have any recollections or memories or discarded ideas from your time working on that panel?

...as your pun.

And then the 3 extra speech bubbles of Yor's daydream, imagining Bond being obsessed with C4!

I am very impressed by how you thought of a similar (but even funnier) pun, and then kept the gag running through the rest of the panel, working within the constraints of the artwork!...

And I've always wondered what the original textwas. Perhaps Japanese uses loan words for plosives and explosives, so the joke is the same, but no!

I looked it up and the original joke was on the same lines, Yor mistaking "consonents" for "causes of death" which is funny but not on the same level...

Great! I love Spy x Family and your translation is a big part of that.

Of my many many favourites, #1 has to be the one where Anya is deciding on a name for Bond and Loid tells her dogs prefer plosives, then Yor mishears this as "dogs prefer explosives".

One of the best panels in the series.... /

An Interview with Dom Flemons My guest post at the Double Down Blog

I got to interview Dom Flemons, a hugely talented multi-instrumentalist and performer and music scholar back in January, and wrote about it for Nevada Humanities in May. Here it is on my new Substack!

Do you still check in on here?

Can I ask you a question about your genius translation of Spy x Family, and one of my favourite literary jokes of all time?

That's a great interview, thanks for sharing! I am a big fan of the Carolina Chocolate Drops (my son now likes them too), and have followed Rhiannon Giddens' career since then, but don't really know much about the other 2 guys in the band. I'll definitely check out Dom Flemons now πŸ˜„

I’m not saying Trump is a Russian asset or traitor…

Installed to inflict maximum damage to America and the west

But if he were, what would he be doing differently to what he is now?

In some ways, it's the same with Farage specifically and Brexit generally. Speaking to their most passionate advocates for (good grief!) almost a decade has made it crystal clear that all they ever really value is the 'freedom' to believe bilge & be vile to various groups of varying vulnerability.

Congrats on the move. Sometimes it can be hard to see long-term investments for what they actually are. Our insight grows stale and it's easy to push them to the back of the mind.

It takes real effort to be able to view them with a fresh perspective, and sometimes we won't like what we find.

OF THE EMPIRE
We will be known as a culture that feared death and adored power, that tried to vanquish insecurity for the few and cared little for the penury of the many. We will be known as a culture that taught and rewarded the amassing of things, that spoke little if at all about the quality of life for people (other people), for dogs, for rivers. All the world, in our eyes, they will say, was a commodity. And they will say that this structure was held together politically, which it was, and they will say also that our politics was no more than an apparatus to accommodate the feelings of the heart, and that the heart, in those days, was small, and hard, and full of meanness.

Many of the scientists that the Trump administration is defunding and persecuting will be working on strategically important technologies and research areas. The UK and other European countries should urgently establish programmes to bring those researchers here.

There's an element of truth, but it's not the whole story.

And maybe those commentators have also put in the same level of cursory Stocko-type analysis.

Have the commentators explained what BIRD actually do? What are their 2 current products?

It's risky, but more knowledge is always best.

#BIRD isn't really a company that fares well under Stockopedia-type criteria.

It's playing a different game, using a different model.

All companies need cash though, so it's definitely a riskier choice for investment.

But before dismissing it out of hand, you should look at what the company does.

It's probably easier to think of the left side as "water", rather than "shi", as it helps reinforce the kanji's meaning as "cry".
