08.08.2025 15:00 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Field battles removing the risk of getting forced into combat if you touch an enemy also just makes it so easy to run past anything. It is an averaging of anything you ask of it - quite literally guessing what the most likely version of a thing might be. It is, by definition, mainstream, as is everything it creates old and deeply ideological, as every model trains on similar data.

If true, then fucking yikes.
This means that no matter what anyone says, keep shitting on AI.
If companies see it as bad publicity, the technology is dead in the water.

04.08.2025 09:10 โ ๐ 81 ๐ 31 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0For the overwhelming majority of people who practice it, sports is not about competition. It's about social belonging. Once you understand that, the reason why transphobes want to ban trans women from it even outside of competition and even in disciplines like darts is pretty obvious.

04.08.2025 00:19 โ ๐ 74 ๐ 23 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 02.1 Lenses, Not Boxes I wondered whether this section was necessary, but games discourse seems to repeatedly find itself adrift in questions of whether _ counts as a _. We have seen the question repeatedly: Do games count as art? Do games without goals count as games? Is The Sims a game? Are hypertexts interactive fiction? Are Twine pieces literature? In fairness to the researchers cited here, all of whom I respect immensely, many of these sources pose or imply the question rhetorically. Still, the necessity of such a framing frustrates me. "Is _ a _?" is, in my opinion, a fruitless question. The question can never be answered to anyone's satisfaction, and it often serves as either a provocation to espouse politics or as a cover to institute gatekeeping. Its agenda is usually opaque to onlookers and bewildering to those trying to advance the field from across disciplines. We should be thinking in lenses, not boxes. It is always more interesting to ask "If we think of _ through the lens of _, what do we learn?" We know it is more interesting to ask "What do we learn by considering Tom Stoppard through the lens of poststructuralism?" than to ask "Is Stoppard's work poststructuralist?" And while some works may be more or less fruitful when examined through different lenses, sometimes the most unlikely pairings of lenses and objects are the most rewarding. Certainly any of the questions above would be much better served by reframing them in this way.
Wow weโre having โgames are artโ discourse again! Just gonna leave this here.
From my dissertation:
But I would argue even minimal interactivity is meaningful. A linear visual novelโs interactivity just amounts to how much text is displayed on each click/button press, but that controls the entire pacing of the story in a different way to a book, where you get an entire page worth of words at once
04.08.2025 00:49 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0idk, like thereโs an acknowledgement that films can use the specialties of other mediums it incorporates without delegitimising themselves, so Iโm not sure why we need games to meet some threshold of meaningful interactivity before we consider them good examples of the mediumโs artistic potential.
04.08.2025 00:49 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0When a movie is mainly good because of its script or acting, we donโt act like itโs a failure of a film, or should have been a novel/play. But if a game has too much text or too many cutscenes people immediately jump to writing off the interactive side of it. Why?
04.08.2025 00:42 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0If you still fret about the validity of the medium as art then youโre still in a shower argument with Roger Ebert decades after heโs not only left the room but gone through the pearly gates. As a wise man once said โWho careโ
