We are looking for teachers willing to test Jasper, a CO2 monitor in their classrooms. Jasper is a prototype and we would like to receive user feedback as soon as possible from several countries. If you are interested, please fill out the form: letsair.org/jasper

This is Jasper, our CO2 monitor, designed for schools, nurseries and anyone who loves penguins and cares about good indoor air renewal.

We also have CO2 monitors throughout the venue, and you can check levels before you come to the con to make your own risk assessment.

You can find those reading here (once we actual set them up in the venue for Friday morning): co2.kawaiicon.org

Itโ€™s nuts the crap people believe about me. Someone even thinks I leafleted schools to scare boys into getting vaccinated! That may just sound silly, but misinformation and disinformation like this means some people want me and others like me jailed or even dead. Itโ€™s heartbreaking.

I thought everyone could use some good news!

My conservation friends' nesting box survived Wellington's wild storm perfectly and a Ruru (tiny owl) sheltered in it. Then one started making a nest! There's a camera inside now, too. The feeds aren't public but here's how they're doing.

Lately I haven't been well on the Wellington buses. Stale air and HVAC not working properly. So last night I took an Aranet CO2 air quality sensor from work and tried it on the No.1 bus from Newtown to Johnsonville.

Thomas Nash (@thomasnash.bsky.social) Wellington Regional Councillor and Transport Chair, Te Pane Matua Taiao Greater Wellington. Adjunct Lecturer Massey University.

@thomasnash.bsky.social you are chairing the transport committee and were present during my presentation. It's extremely disappointing to see so much inaction and authorities passing the bucket instead of taking responsibilities. Other municipalities can provide good ventilation on public transport.

04.07.2025 04:12 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And worse: GW is currently procuring new trains, and there are no sufficient requirements for ventilation for the new trains. Instead they just require UIC 553 which targets 5000ppm CO2.

04.07.2025 04:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

So it looks like everyone is passing the bucket and nobody is taking responsibility. I'm not a lawyer but from my understanding GW has the ultimate responsibility for H&S, but as far as I an tell there's no tangible action - not even data collection to know the extent of the issue.

04.07.2025 04:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Besides that, there are plenty of studies that all demonstrate that the observed CO2 concentrations are not only inacceptable for public health but impacting the driver's cognitive capacities similar to a drunk driver. How is that acceptable?

04.07.2025 04:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I received a response from Metlink, which basically explained that drivers cannot control the aircon or even open windows any longer, and a number of excuses why without national standards they won't pursue any engineering solutions because it's "too hard".

Slide: Metlink and GW have been aware of poor ventilation on public transport for a long time
- Metlink commissioned study showing buses regularly exceeded 800ppm indicating inadequate ventilation, October 2022
- โ€œPoor ventilation in public transport settings in Aotearoa NZ: New data for buses and trainsโ€, July 2023, found that in buses and trains with more than 50% of seats occupied, ventilation was typically poor, with CO2 levels above 800 ppm 94% and 77% of the time, respectively.
- โ€œOn-board bus air quality - Impact of changing ventilation on a double-decker busโ€ NIWA study from July 2023 requested by Metlink
- โ€œthe results suggest that existing ventilation may be insufficient at times of high passenger volumesโ€, MoH advice requested by Metlink in May 2023
- In a published OIA response Metlink stated that it "believes there is significant further testing that needs to be undertaken and is advocating that Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and the Ministry of Health conduct more robust testing to enable national air quality standards for public transport buses to be determined.โ€œ
- โ€œinvestigation into engineering solutions for improving air quality in public buses started in December 2022โ€ - OIA response
- Driver shortages due to high levels of sickness regularly being quoted by Metlink as reason for the high levels of cancelled or delayed services

- Educate drivers to keep windows open, and open all doors at every stop, especially now during favourable weather
- Remind drivers to not use recirculation but always let enough fresh air in
- Put up information sheets for drivers and passengers to remind them of the importance of ventilation
- Install publicly accessible CO2 monitors to provide immediate feedback to the driver, and to make passengers aware of air quality, as well as to identify harder to ventilate routes/vehicles with regular higher levels
- Reward drivers who consistently have well ventilated buses
- Perform spot checks, especially during peak times

Including that 'PCBUs โ€œmust minimise risks to health and safety, so far as is reasonably practicable, by taking one or more that is the most appropriate and effective taking into account the nature of the riskโ€'
Yet, passengers are only left with the least effective 'last line of defence' (masks)

MoH also recommend a target of <800ppm CO2 or 5ACh for procurement of new buses and reminded Metlink of the 'Hierarchy of control measures'.

Which isn't correct - NZ has regulations that apply - to drivers and passengers. Metlink has asked Ministry of Health for guidance and were given standards and exposure limits, told that these apply public transport, including to passengers.

Thanks for sharing your data. Sadly this isn't uncommon, or unknown by GW/Metlink.
There have been a number of studies and investigations into this, but without any meaningful action (as as as I can tell).
Instead Metlink and GW seem to be hiding behind a 'lack of national standards'.
