I wonder how often people actually update their distributions if they are rolling? It makes sense for drivers sure but like if there is a crapload of libraries do you just update everyday? I ponder this sometimes

Yeah, I use it on my laptop and my servers but it's just hard to kind of justify it on my personal PC, I do use nix flakes in development but I just can't wrap my head around using it outside of that I suppose. Even though I do use flatpaks quite a bit

I suppose yeah. I'm more used to Slackware, but Arch is close but I get that. I do think I made the right choice for my laptop and servers though especially considering they need to be setup in very specific ways and use cases, but I struggled with the concept on my main rig yeah

But I desperately want to use NixOS on my main system - I use it on my surface pro, my pi clusters, my main servers, and even my steam deck. I do not understand the hold out on my personal rig at all, maybe I should just try and stick with it. 🤔

I do not quite understand myself to be honest but I install NixOS on my main "gaming"/workstation PC and it hasn't clicked with me yet. I stay on Nix, upload my configs to a private git, sigh and install Arch Linux. Maybe I feel time constrained? I will investigate and try again this week.

I've been daily driving Linux now for 2 weeks and so far, nothing out of the ordinary. All my apps work (yes even my 32b DOS apps!!) happiness!

I am able to use nix to pass the theming and design along between distros!

I unfortunately have to jump back to arch+nix for a while longer. Ran into issues I just don't want to sit here all day fixing, but you know what I love? Git pulling my setup and it just *works*

Okay ran into a funny issue on #NixOS: GNOME 47 fails to run with SteamVR (crashes session completely), KDE (my main DE anyway) works fine but when Steam requests permission it fails if you installed it under GNOME like I did. It's solved with a reinstall, though!

Is Ubuntu really that bad these days? I remember using Ubuntu 7.10 and getting my free CD and stickers; and having a great time with compiz silliness

I think it comes down to personal preference. While I love working in terminals it's not something I prefer doing especially when editing or programming, I used to do it when I used emacs. More power to you though!

I really like NixOS. It's like designing the OS for me and me alone. It makes me happy that I get to tinker like this again! I would also like to learn something like sway or i3 or hyprland but I'm not quite sure if I'm ready to give up my KDE/gnome lifestyle just yet!

The Linux community, the IRC community I met who helped me get books on assembly when I was a pre teen and cheered me on knowing i was different (I got diagnosed with autism later in life), helped me. So it will always have a strong place in my heart forever. Thank you. :)

I was obsessed with it. I found out in multiplayer lobbies I could spawn in anything or move NPCs by literally pasting packet hex in the chat! I finally saved up money to get diablo 2 but it wouldn't run. I needed to go back to windows :( I sadly stayed there until well, I'm back now!

I keep hitting c+s to search out of habit and it deleted a line in my little setup!

I tried vscode and it was okay but then you start loading old pascal or c projects and it just has a difficult time. I ended up with AstroNvim and so far it's been a delight! Just gotta get used to new keybinds :(
