Nope. Been happening for years, like Xmas stuff on the shelves on October. A function of having to order supplies in advance and then having them take up warehouse space vs. getting them on shelves where early birds can start buying them.

If I'm remembering this correctly, Kate Quinn, the ex-museum director, was the one that started the museum audit. She was then pushed out of her job when people (including Neil Gaiman) didn't like her looking into the ethics of their favorite "gothy" museum.

Hard to convince us to buy more gear when we reach a stage of, "Can't display or store any more stuff." Outside decor at least has to be replaced eventually due to weather damage. I happily look at new stuff but rarely buy anymore.

My mother puked after eating a caramel apple as a child and to this day (she's 71) won't touch caramel. Given her tendency to go, "Let me have a taste!" and eat three big bites of my dessert when I was a kid, this led to me picking a lot of caramel toppings when I would have preferred hot fudge.
