Hermes's creepy smile while watching Prometheus's torment, like Apollo's half-smile while scientifically slicing up Marsyas, really shows the awful detached—literally inhuman—sadism of the gods. Van B is exceptionally good at conveying that.

Van B clearly liked that upside down foreshortened screaming pose, as he used it in another painting from the same year, Prometheus Being Chained by Vulcan, now in the Rijksmuseum. Hard to watch, but not quite as purely horrific as Marsyas's fate.

Another van B I've seen in the flesh (so to speak) & adore is the creepy Apollo Flaying Marsyas in Houston. The scientific fascination of Apollo's gaze as he skins Marsyas alive will never not appall me. Love van B's posing poor Marsyas upside down & foreshortened. His scream's practically audible.

This painting, The Concert—whose home at the Detroit Institute of Arts I used to live near—is what first drew my attention to van Baburen & via him to other members of the Utrecht Caravaggisti, like Gerrit van Honthorst & Hendrik ter Brugghen. They're probably my fave Europainting cohort.

Seeing that photo of Obama putting the Medal of Freedom on Tom Homan circulate again. It's fake. Homan did get a civil service award during the Obama administration, but it wasn't the Medal of Freedom, it wasn't a medal (it was a certificate), and Obama didn't present it to him in person.
