Option 1: YVR to Istanbul takes you north of Baffin, almost over Ellesmere Island then over central Greenland.
Option 2: YVR to Dubai takes you straight over the north pole.

I've flown direct from Vancouver to London UK a couple times, and one of the perks is that that you fly over Hudson's Bay, Baffin Island, and Greenland; over a part of a world that's very hard to access. I looked it up, and there's two that get you even further north:

3. You get to experience the race twice: you’re hanging out on one section of track and the cellular network can’t handle the traffic of everyone looking at the live timing, so you really don’t know what’s happening in the moment. Then you can watch the broadcast afterward and have it all filled in.

Visited Quebec last week for the Mont Sainte Anne downhill mountain bike World Cup, and I have three takeaways:
1. the speed these riders go boggles the mind. I knew they were fast, but it’s different to see it in person.
2. The damage that 5 days of poutine for dinner can do to the body is immense

Dipping back into Arduino programming as part of an effort to make the spectroscopy instrument I’ve been building more reliable, and I’m definitely realizing I didn’t really understand C pointers when I first learned them in undergrad.

The queue behaviour for asynchronous objects is opaque, and there’s a graveyard of MATLAB Answers posts of questions where the only answer is asker describing a Byzantine workaround they used.

If you’re ever tempted to write MATLAB code that uses asynchronous objects like serialport or timers for communication, ask yourself if you want to invite that evil into your life.

Interested to see how Carney’s plan to halve development charges gets implemented.
Ultimately, what we’ve seen is a perverse incentive in municipal government to never raise taxes on their most reliable constituents by transferring the cost to people outside their ridings.

The end result of not raising property taxes for decades. 🤷‍♂️

We’ve gone too far with calling the high end version of a product the ‘pro’ version. It’s got to at least have a plausible business purpose. AirPod pro? Swiffer Pro? Nah. Where does this stop? Cadbury pro? Milk-Bone pro? Kleenex Pro? Words mean something.

I just learned that there is one type of vertebrate that does not have hemoglobin in its blood: the crocodile icefish, which lives in coastal waters off Antarctica. Their blood is clear, and oxygen is circulated by being dissolved in plasma.

This album is the first time I’ve encountered Pile and it really spoke to me. Like the review says: “Pile songs are marvels of songwriting architecture.” Probably my favourite release of the year so far.

Picked up the most recent battlefield on a lark because it was $5, and I’ve got to say, everyone is so much better at aiming than I am! I feel so old.
