Over the years, this has become one of my biggest pet peeves:

You might be loud enough to project the SOUND of your voice, Darren, but the microphone allows other people to hear the words.

Two summers ago, I spoke with Nicki Marrone about campus violence and school design. She said gun violence has potential to change school design. Some changes we're already seeing: keep instruction space under 1 roof. Fewer doors.

As of now, there are four e-comments on the city council agenda, and all are opposed Sullivan's nomination.

Critics of the nomination said Sullivan's relationship to her son gave them pause, especially after Hudspeth nominated a resident who has challenged more than 100 books on Denton ISD shelves. Sullivan said she isn't carrying water for anyone in her application to the library board.

Sullivan said she applied for the board post. Mayor Gerard Hudspeth didn't approach her for the role. Sullivan also describes herself as an active library patron in every community she's lived in.

In an interview Monday night, Ellen Quinn told me that she doesn't believe in banning books. She describes herself as conservative, but would be collegial, not confrontational, if appointed to the board.

Denton residents have objected to Sullivan's nomination because she is the mother of Michael Quinn Sullivan, publisher of Texas Scorecard and a leader of the now-dissolved Empower Texans.

In the work session, Denton City Council Member Brian Beck (D2) said he plans to oppose the nomination of Ellen Quinn Sullivan to the library board. Council members Paul Meltzer (D3) and Joe Holland (D4) signaled their support for Sullivan.
