I definitely think people are too quick to call writers bad or misunderstanding the characters. They'll ignore the context of the story or have almost purposefully misinterpreted a story because it doesn't match their view of how a character "should be". I mean just look at the Batfam fandom.

Yesn't? I think I get what you're saying, characters can and should be changed to fit the story. I agree with the sentiment to some extent, but sometimes characters don't resemble themselves in any meaningful way and it's hard to understand why the character was changed in that way.

I meant more like the technical skills they require. What it's like conveying information in comics vs novels or the writing process of formatting scenes. I've been writing more prose styled work rather than scripts and wondered if you too felt the differences between the mediums.

A month later and I have a new question: what are some of the biggest differences between writing novels and comics?

Hey, what if I started headcanoning that like half of the characters from DC comics were fans of MASH? Then wrote fanfics and drew fanart related to that fact, what then?

But that felt petty to complain like that, so I decided a general "calling characters out of character is kind of dumb" more productive... Also so little room for text and I'm not used to doing multi-posts... Anyway I ranted enough to a stranger on the open webs.

Surprisingly really relevant to why I wrote that post. Alan Grant changed irl as a person and Anarky changed because of that, but all my friend sees is this warped made up version of Anarky after 5 issues and completely ignores mine and other writers interruptions... Actually all canon.

I'm kind of over fans calling characters out of character? I feel that the term is over used and often ignores the message and context of certain stories. It also diminishes the Greek myth aspect of comics that I enjoy.

I went to Matt Fraction's panel Bat Fraction at RCCC and he said something that was so real. To paraphrase, he can't ruin Batman because so much has been done with the character and he's now free to do whatever he wants.

Yep! Especially for fanfiction even though it's a different medium. Many comic publishers also sell novels so it's very much in direct competition. There's a reason the live action Scooby Doo fan series got told to stop. Currently I think many fan comics just go under the radar so to speak.

As long as the work is considered transformative, adding new elements etc, and isn't using direct copyrighted names, it can generally get away. Third party figures and mugs I can see as big no-nos because they care more about that stuff, especially if it's too similar.

No they couldn't. Merch based on IPs is allowed because they're not replacements to the text, some copy right holders wish they could enforce this more though. It's a large reason why fanfic can't be sold, it's viewed as a substitute for original material and therefore is competing for sales.
