at the center of the efforts to destroy civil society in russia, hungary, georgia and elsewhere is the stigmatization, harassment, & criminalization of NGOs. that's what this is about, a full-on assault on democratic debate & freedoms.
this is not hyperbole. it's right here.

The book is super engaging and fascinating. I do not know how you managed to pull this off while going to law school - truly an incredible feat. Congratulations, and thank you!

Can we please stop saying he was “deported”? He was sent to a maximum security prison seemingly for life when he has never even been charged with a crime.

It’s sad to see powerful lawyers - of all people - knuckle under so readily on core principles when faced with a threat of economic loss.
A brazen and sad little shakedown…

My hope is that downtown (which I still think is mostly incredibly pleasant) continues to fill up with these quirky small businesses. There are encouraging signs that’s happening. While I hope Nordstrom stays too, maybe life after Target, J Crew, and REI can actually be better than it was….

I appreciate that this is well intentioned. But I do think it’s the kind of generalization and stereotyping that harms more than it helps. And I think giving this a label that conjures Nazis and the KKK also ensures that people will put up barriers even to good and legitimate messages.

Well, because you associated them with white supremacy culture in your post. I don’t like the suggestion that people of color don’t have a sense of urgency or can’t be perfectionists. That seems more problematic than helpful to me.

Much as I loathe the current DEI backlash, this kind of thing contributes to it, in my view. More than that, it seems insulting (to put it gently) to suggest that people who are not white don’t tend to be perfectionists or have a sense of urgency.

After Trump’s DEI Order, Companies Navigate a Legal Minefield
Companies navigate a legal minefield as President Trump wages war on diversity programs, but they still have to guard against complaints of bias.
This is a good piece. But we should be clear that the use of the undefined phrase “illegal DEI” is a scare tactic. The only “illegal DEI” practices are preferences, quotas, & separating employees by protected characteristics without sufficient business necessity.

Insane to have rigorous ethical standards for everyone but those at the top. But that’s apparently how we do now in the judicial and executive branches. Hope I don’t get disciplined as a lawyer for saying so.

Confidence in U.S. Courts Plummets to Rate Far Below Peer Nations
Very few countries have experienced similar declines, typically in the wake of wrenching turmoil. Experts called the data, from a new Gallup poll, stunning and worrisome.
This is so troubling and sad for the legal profession and the country as a whole. When Mitch flouted the rules following Scalia’s death he accelerated the decline. And the enormous impact of a criminal president continues to take its toll…

One thing Krugman doesn’t address is the potential impact of California’s unique position (at least relative to other states) on non-competition agreements. California’s prohibition on those agreements allowed cross pollination between tech companies that could not have occurred in most states.
