Braid: Tariffs are only the start of Trump's drive to absorb Canada. We must not cave President Donald Trump's tariffs are about much more than economic conflict. He would absorb Canada, and might if we buckle under pressure.

This is a worthwhile read from Calgary:

Saturday April 27, 2002 โ€” the last time I saw Rickey Henderson play live โ€” kids opening day at Fenway, sunny, mid 50s โ€” 43 years old he hits his 80th lead off home run, the only one the Sox needed that day as Derek Lowe pitched the first no hitter at Fenway in 37 years.

Exclusive: Trump would impose 25% tariffs on oil from Mexico and Canada under trade plan, sources say President-elect Donald Trump's plan to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports in his first day in office does not exempt crude oil from the trade penalties, two sources familiar with the plan told Reuters on Tuesday.

Of course he wouldโ€ฆ

Because this isnโ€™t his tariff planโ€ฆ itโ€™s his leveraging change on border security plan.

It is intended to leverage that change and then disappear.

There will also be a tariff planโ€ฆ which may exempt oil and gas, auto, and lots of other things.

Reducing illegal movement of people and banned substances at the Canada - US border โ€” provided no impediment to legal traffic benefits both countries - chiefly Canada.

High tariffs on goods legally transported across the same border would hurt both countries.

Keep calm and carry on.

To navigate our trading relationship with the US successfully, Canadian leaders need to take a firm, calm, consistent approach based on mutual interest in movement of goods across the border.

Overreacting every time President Trump puts an idea out there is a losing approach.

I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s weirdโ€ฆ but the take is solid.

Iโ€™d add that the lack of proactive communication approach is itself an indicative cause of the political troubles.

If youโ€™re pick a fight, you need to fight it.

Insiders say Doug Ford will use the spectre of Trump to justify an early election Thanks to the economic uncertainty triggered by a second Trump presidency, Ford's planned pitch to voters would be a simple one, Progressive Conservative sources told the Star.

Nonsense.

Ford government already has a mandate through June of 2026โ€ฆ the period during which CUSMA negotiations and tariff issues will be addressed.

If they need to be in office to promote economic stability, then they would not call an election.

Canadians outside of Quรฉbec are largely not paying attention to this. Itโ€™s well past time to pay attention.

Opinion | A Worldwide โ€˜Jew Huntโ€™ Antisemitism is reaching the point of catastrophe, for Jews and for Europe itself.

This scenario is closer to Canadian reality than most acknowledge โ€” the edge is here already.

Vocal political protest must be welcome. Targeting Jews must not.

Political and spiritual leaders must act.

All Canadian voices are needed.

Let us never forget the sacrifices they made or the cause of freedom from tyranny they served.

Shawn Micallef: If you donโ€™t want encampments in your park, you should speak up for shelters in your neighbourhood The recent public pushback against new shelters by politicians and residents makes it seem as if the last few years havenโ€™t taught us anything.

This is important. We need housing and the shelters to fight homelessness.
