Remembering Rita Hester, Who Changed What It Means to Remember Trans Lives Rita Hester’s 1998 murder inspired a movement, but it’s just as important to remember her life as her death.

In 1999, the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) was founded by US activists Gwendolyn Ann Smith, Nancy Nangeroni, and Jahaira DeAlto to honour the memory of Rita Hester, a Black trans woman who was murdered the previous year.

Her murder remains unsolved.
