Long story short, the answer to your original question is people would rather play a worse game with all their friends than a better game solo.

Network effect innit - you can go anywhere and play 40k, if you want to do something else you'll have a much more difficult time. This is especially true for big events and social things, where other games don't tend to have anything like the same infrastructure...
