After weeks of 90+ temps, it’s cool this morning. I’ve been hanging out in the garden watching the birds and the bees. Hummers, Carolina Wrens, Cardinals, Brown Thrashers, House Sparrows, Goldfinches & tons of native bees & honey bees. It’s a good day to be me.

The new Sun Ra doc is awesome (and I’d say that even if I weren’t in it). It won’t be on PBS until 2026, so I recommend the virtual screener being offered this weekend via the BlackStar Film Festival. Here's a quick piece I wrote for WRTI, based on conversation with director Christine Turner.

I am pretty sure this is native field thistle, Cirsium Discolor. I am so excited. I love thistles. Most I see around here are not native thistle. Can’t wait till the bees and butterflies find it.

I planted this for the first time last year. I have it everywhere this year. It’s such a happy plant. In the mornings, I can hear the bees on it from 15 feet away. They love it.

Thanks for your kind words. I try to keep my yard wildlife friendly and hope that they take refuge here. I have water dishes, areas of high grass and thick plantings, mostly native plants (besides garden veggies) dead hedges, branch piles. I hope to create a small pond sometime soon.
