This Day in Labor History: February 6, 1919. The Seattle General Strike began. Let's talk about this much mentioned but little understood event. Let's also talk about general strikes a bit, which are very misunderstood, even by activists, and why we don't have them today in their classic form.

Just within the past hour, nearly a dozen YouTube accounts have posted the pulled 60 Minutes CECOT story. CBS and Google can keep trying to take them all down, but it's sort of pointless now.

Would love it if any of the Washington press corps followed the cues of this photographer.

Were there moments that you missed? Anything that happened that’s on the cutting room floor? I don’t think there’s anything I missed that I wish I’d gotten. I’ll give you a little anecdote: Stephen Miller was perhaps the most concerned about the portrait session. He asked me, “Should I smile or not smile?” and I said, “How would you want to be portrayed?” We agreed that we would do a bit of both. And then when we were finished, he comes up to me to shake my hand and say goodbye. And he says to me, “You know, you have a lot of power in the discretion you use to be kind to people.” And I looked at him and I said, “You know, you do, too.”

Really beautiful writing, Emily. A bittersweet feeling at the end of book… it was amazing to see how they had all grown and developed but I was sad to say goodbye to them. Can’t wait to read your next book.

Recently read @emilystjams.bsky.social’s fabulous novel Woodworking. I love an intergenerational small town story of connection, and this was moving and delightful. One of my very favorite reads of the year.
