this one is even more bonkers. these things are dangerous, on both the individual and societal level, and nothing will convince me otherwise

one of the great tragedies of our age is how many people are willing to view AI as magic because they don't understand how it functions but unwilling to exhibit any humility at all towards more important things they understand even less (like the climate or medicine)

Likening PhD holders to a (non-functional) algorithm is a form of dehumanisation & anti-intellectualism that is a bellwether for contemporary fascism. Essentially it's a typical β€” if not the archetypal β€” first step towards fascism: to dehumanise, deskill, defund, and, ultimately, fire the academics.

the press ought to treat pete hegseth's association with doug wilson the way they would treat a black public official who was also a hebrew israelite

When you say "AI is absolute shit" people will say "that shows you don't understand AI and how it's supposed to be used" and I will say "I'm not talking about AI in some imaginary rainbow world where it's used right and not fecklessly monetized, I'm talking about our world, fucknuts."

to what extent does the administration intend to use this money to fund things that congress won't, and also, treating states like conquered territories to be dominated is one of those things that really makes you think the goal of these people is to dissolve the union

I think that one reason very-online people are more freaked out by Trump Administration appointees is that they are familiar to us as reply guys β€” just sheer bullshit spewers, ignorant know-it-alls.

there's an interesting idea threaded through the last three or four Jurassic Park movies: mega corporations are convinced cloning dinosaurs is worth a huge amount of money somehow but it never ever pans out

you could make a really fun movie or series with this as the underlying premise

The MAGA armchair diplomats frame this as Zelenskyy trying to hang onto power. They never understand that Zelenskyy legally cannot agree to this β€” and if in some imaginary timeline he agreed to it on a Monday, Ukrainians would run him out of office by the Tuesday morning.

This morning I watched my fella sleep gently, while reading about how Donald Trump wants to force Ukraine to just give away his home, where he grew up, where his family live + his ancestors are buried β€” a place Russian troops have not set foot in. The word β€œdisgust” does not begin to cover it.

we all know that the proof for the administration that an institution is not implementing affirmative action will be the percentage of nonwhite admits. the lower the better. any more than a smattering of black and Hispanic students will be evidence of illegal discrimination (against whites)

Can We Still Govern?

It is fucking insane that we had a decade of people complaining about the dangers of cancel culture, and now literally hundreds of thousands of people are being purged from government jobs for ideological reasons, but that is not cancel culture.

Because, of course, those don't refer to the same things, you don't think they refer to the same things, in fact you don't think there's any particular connection to be made there; you just think there's an opportunity for cheap points and easy digital reward.

For the record, Trumpism became ascendant in part because American liberalism made itself such an incredibly vulnerable target, and part of the reason it was such a vulnerable target was because people like you protected it from any good faith internal criticism for a decade, and now here we are. They were ample opportunities to come up with ways to reform American liberalism that would have made it more defensible and less subject to the most vitriolic critiques of the right, but you are among the individual people who was the most relentlessly hyperactive in declaring absolutely any of that internal criticism to be somehow off limits or in bad faith, and so in a very direct way you are a major part of the problem. It's telling that you seem to think that fundamentally the reason why there's been this massive conservative lurch is because liberals did not do enough to adequately police progressive discourse from any such criticism; as is typical of people in your position you seem to think that they're simply is no such thing as an organic conservative impulse within our country. But there is and was, which is why the woke moment was such a horrific strategic mistake. I suspect you know that.

the thing i don't get about this is that sure, you're some groyper who thinks the posters look cool. but, like, you must know that the nazis lost, and they didn't just lose, they lost to the people they *deemed inferior*: a polyglot nation of shopkeepers on one front & russian peasants on the other

People have trouble interpreting this. Nobody’s saying Donald Trump or Pam Bondi are personally selecting Nazi iconography. They don’t read enough for that. The point is they hire and promote Nazis who ARE steeped in Nazi iconography, and they’re fine with it.

The reason the Dems are a failed party is because they have collectively decided that the best policy for any issue is a halfway compromise between a good idea and fascist bigotry, rather than fighting for any sort of coherent ethical framework

Cutting your humanities programs is performance art in the guise of budget cuts and everyone in academia knows it and everyone outside does not and that's why they can keep going doing this bullshit.
