James Watson, dead at 97, was a scientific legend and a pariah among his peers
James Watson, the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA who died Thursday at 97, was a scientific legend and a pariah among his peers.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.
Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."
Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Imagine: you are visiting a colleague's office, or a conference room, and you want to explain something. You turn to the chalkboard and <GASP> you are struck by the sight of this. CAN YOU EVEN DO SCIENCE WITH THIS? Unlikely. Better to be prepared.

A screenshot from the Adobe Acrobat FAQ.
It states that the AI Assistant does not automatically process documents opened in Acrobat. The user must select the AI Assistant or generative summary icon.
At least it doesn't automatically upload your PDF without your consent to the cloud...
But still, I'd much prefer to not get pushed by them towards using their AI.
