I was shocked and pleased in such a good way by Jerry Goldsmith’s “Planet of the Apes” score which I’d never heard about til I watched the movie.

Go for the best-feeling neck (does it fit your hands), body shape/weight (does it fit your lap/shoulders/belly).Also if you like the unplugged sound; that gives you a sense of whether the sustain and overtones match your style. The electronics and setup (string height etc) are much easier to change.

It's a good point that newsstand mags weren't publishing transcriptions of vocal harmonies the way they were guitar tabs.

I'm glad there were serious magazines for musicians! But their embrace of certain artists and genres and relative disinterest in certain (entire categories) of others did a lot of harm. The mags' influence has waned, but a lot of the guitar internet seems to still be suffering under the influence.

Guitar magazines are as band as Rolling Stone for creating a canon of sexist, racist, snobby nonsense.

I wasn’t there at the time, but seems like it was prevalent, then written out of the “real rock’n’roll” narrative. Nuggets was rescuing rarities, not documenting the mainstream. (Maybe parallels to obscure blues resuscitated by later UK rockers, a fave thread of @andrewhickey.500songs.com ?)

Aren’t there plenty of American white boys with pretty harmonies from that era? But they were “soft rock” or “folk rock” or “blue eyed soul”, rather than what the Nuggets compilers were looking for.

Do you know why they decided to switch from b&w to color? Or why the ‘68 one wasn’t color in the first place?

I disagree! But I’m glad we can each have a fave. They are both equally clumsy but I am more charmed by the “gritty ‘70s” thing.
