I found a lot of great stuff about gaming and learning communities in "Women and Gaming: The Sims and 21st Century Learning" by James Gee & Elisabeth Hayes. Don't remember what else is in there, though. It's been a few years.

So much this. A team of good phlebotomists who take careful, clear records (so their colleagues can find those veins on the first try) are just the best too.

Should also mention that some of its themesβ€”especially the corruption and institutional racismβ€”feel very (maybe painfully) relevant right now. Haven't watched it in a few years. Wondering how watching it in 2025 is going to feel.

The trailer feels a little silly to me. Hits a few highlights, but also makes the movie feel a lot pulpier than it actually is. either way, it's one of my favorites.

Some great stuff here. Thanks for the thread!

I'm going to rewatch Lone Star for eleventieth time tonight. Starts with a 20 year-old murder mystery. Weaves together 3 very different southwestern, intergenerational stories. Wraps up with some beautiful moments of connection, forgiveness & catharsis.

As a design history teacher and goth(ish) high schooler from the late 80s, I have so many feelings about this.

Can't eat ice cream any more, due to health issues. So I'm counting on someone out there to eat a scoop of ice cream for me.

Tom, this is incredibly disappointing. You need to treat your artists better.

I can't imagine a single version of this that appeals to me. But I can't stop imagining versions that will make my life harder.

I think this is where I'm at too. There is so much work to do right now. I need all my spoons to support my students, my community, & my family. There may be good reasons to make a "we're so cooked" post, but I don't have the resources to engage with them.

Thanks for saying this. Every semester I have conversations with my design students about creative work, survival, and finding some kind of sustainable joy or satisfaction in a deeply unfair industry. Goldman's suggestion, and discussions like this one, are great reference points.

I think of it mostly as a choir/theater-kid thing. A choir/theater-adult thing too, I guess.

As someone with similar eye issues (macular hole in one eye), I thought I had the same experience with baseball. Then I remembered that batting in cricket is much more like self-defense. So glad I never had to do that.

Different problem for me, but a similar experience. Lost all of the central vision in my right eye when I was 10. Small objects (like most sportsballs) stopped registering in my depth perception. Turned most of my favorite sports into variously painful versions of dodgeball.

My therapist suggested this about a year ago, during a family health emergency. It's been a lifesaver.

It's not strictly a relationship thing, but I also have an hourly reminder to stop what I'm doing and take a few deep breaths. It started as a way to practice regulating my anxiety during a family health emergency (thank you to my therapist!) and it's been super helpful in stressful conversations.

I've been reminding myself that everyone's allowed to feel and express (within limits) their own emotions, even when they don't match mine.

That means waiting a beat before I respond to students. When I have the spoons, I'm also checking in with friends and family, just to ask "How're you doing?"

I was in my early teens. Heard it on the radio while traveling from Sacramento to San Francisco for a medical appointment. Felt disconnected (compared to my friends who saw it on TV) but also extra anxious, as my medical anxiety got tangled up with the horrible news.

"Birdhouse in Your Soul" for me, especially for the verse about lighthouses, nightlights and "countless screaming Argonauts".

"I've fallen in love for the first time,

Might be my favorite lyric ever.

Radio Ga Ga

Been working in precarious, messy professions (like illustration and teaching) for most of my life. Despite all the disappointment and anxiety, I feel "Radio, someone still loves you," down to my soul.

It isn't perfect, but it's worked pretty well, especially in a discipline (like design) where annotated photos make sense.

It focuses on the goals of the assignment (personal exploration of the world, and using your words to organize your thoughts).

If students do use AI, it's also easier (and more helpful) to talk about what they should be doing, rather than punishing them for something they shouldn't.

The the specific details, personal viewpoint & the "take your own photos" requirements must be met before we'll grade the assignment. For me, it seems to work better than a blanket prohibition against AI.

3. In addition to your analysis, your notes should include specific details about the design, and a personal viewpoint that expresses a clear opinion, discusses how the design affects you specifically, and connects the design to our weekly topics.

My design principles 101 class uses a lot of annotated photo assignments. They get a lot less AI pollution than the pure writing assignments. Here's how they work:

1. Take a photo of a design (product/environment/etc.) you use every day. You must be in the photo, interacting with the design.
