I loved all that Zen stuff. Probably that was the first time I ever heard about it and nobody around me would’ve had any idea of what it was either. He was a real gateway.

I got hooked into Salinger at about 13 and remain hooked for reasons I don’t fully understand. I bought these in Compendium probably about 1973.

And that’s right, the lives they lead were totally horrific.

The article was good but the story is so grim. There’s something about how the stuff that we love also produces all this triviality and darkness. And it’s something especially American, or so it seems.

You mean the reviewer’s style? I thought that was okay. The lives they had were a kind of horror though.

I can’t even read this properly. American horror.
