It makes more sense when you see it as the conservative equivalent of an arts subsidy. Just like how liberals want more art and want to support people who want to make art, conservatives want more bullying and to support people who want to bully people.

There’s a sort of Dunning-Kruger effect happening where people who read widely, consider various perspectives, and put in effort to understand views they disagree with worry that they don’t do that enough, while people who don’t do any of that accuse others of being in a bubble and call it a day.

I love the punditry that is essentially, “Mamdani probably can’t deliver on all of his progressive promises so to be safe we better go with the resigned in disgrace guy.”

I've watched one movie featuring Nazis since this came up, and the symbol was featured pretty prominently. If I had accidentally had that as a tattoo, I would have paused the movie immediately and start figuring out how to get rid of it.

Far too many people base their entire politics on whether someone has a negative view of Chuck Schumer et al and just assume they hate them for the same reasons. It's burned people often enough that you'd think they'd have learned by now.

Part of our national problem is that many refuse to accept the stakes of politics, and the in-their-face-but-somehow-denied reality that “let’s not starve children, especially when there’s money for a ballroom and a foreign bailout” is not appealing to shared values, but to a partisan position.

I had to move the cat's food bowl away from the window because he would wake us up at night, walk us over to the bowl, and make us guard him while he ate in the dark. Since moving the bowl from the window he's stopped doing this, and I think it's because he knows he's no longer at risk from snipers.

"Only billionaires should pay higher taxes" discourse is downstream from a general belief that policy change need not involve tradeoffs, and that the very existence of tradeoffs is an automatic dealbreaker. My run-ins with people who hold this view are what will finally cause my psychotic break.

Maaaaan, this. So much this. Every time there's any kind of actual in-depth survey we find that the American people are *abysmally* ignorant about even the most basic political facts, but the pundit class just immediately forgets & proceeds with political analysis based on subtle policy differences.
