Biggs killer whales made a visit deep into Elliott Bay today with a calf in tow.

At a volunteer aid spot, a family of 16 picked up blankets, food and clothing. All 16, spanning three generations, lived in three homes next to each other. All three homes burned. Now they are sleeping in their cars.

Another woman and her family rummaged through the debris to look for valuables, managed to save a couple, including a little a piece of petrified wood a grandparent had gifted. Her teenage son cried as they walked away.

One man, as he walked on what remained of his Altadena home, kept telling me how hard he had worked for his house where his boys grew up.

I spent a couple of days helping out with coverage of the LA fires. The destruction is so widespread it’s hard to grasp. The fire can be cruelly uneven, leaving a home relatively unscathed while the next door burns to the ground.

The other night we embraced the big dark (and a dry evening) and spent some time at the beach with a black light looking for sea glass. The kid was throroughly entertained.

Unlike last year when a big beaver dam and low water flow stopped them, coho salmon and pushing their way upstream.
