My great grandmother's parents only spoke French. Louisiana outlawed the use of French in public schools in 1921, when my great grandmother was 10 years old. She continued to be able to understand and used some expressions, but none of her children (inc. my grandmother) ever learned to speak it.

That's the thing that's so maddening. There have ALWAYS been significant pockets of the US where English was not the dominant language. Always. Dutch in NYC. German in Pennsylvania. French in Louisiana. Swedish in the Upper Midwest. Spanish in the SW. Plus all the 19th c. immigrant languages.
