From what my friends who were into the series told me, the story isn't even good, you just have to dig so deep for it that figuring it out is the appeal. Combine that with an edgy aesthetic combining Creepypastas w/ familiar childhood elements and you get the perfect meal for 2010's autistic kids

From an outsider's perspective it looks like the main appeal is not the games themselves but the theorizing and speculation around their lore, that has enough repcurring elements to keep people's attention spans but is vague enough for them to constantly change it to keep discussion going.
