TIL, I would have expected companies to use a card with a reciprocal agreement with UnionPay if at all possible (Discover, Pulse, JCB, RuPay, or BC Card). I have a Discover card and one of the reasons I haven't gotten rid of it is that it could be useful if I visit china.

There are a few countries which have national card networks (e.g. Mir in RU, Elo in BR, UnionPay in CN), many of which have international acceptance agreements, but the only one I can think of that has managed to court foreign issuers is RuPay from India.

i'm guessing the same reason numbered seals are put on containers and such: in order to show that no one has opened it and taken or modified parts since it was sealed.

ime "expatriate" is used primarily for white people and "immigrant" for non-white people.

In US legal terms, "expatriate" means to renounce citizenship, though i don't see it used much that way. It also has a connotation of only temporarily residing abroad.
