Innovate? In this economy? With these profit margins? It is time we realized how far extraction and innovation stand in opposition to each other.

"Canadian businesses are immensely profitable ... Those profits are also at record levels relative to GDP:"

Seems remarkable given the supposed lack of a "business-friendly" government in Ottawa for the last decade.

I’m disappointed to see you weren’t chosen. You’re a refreshing voice in politics and I hope you’ll be able to move beyond this setback.

Great name choice. The last Pope Leo, the 13th, was known as a pope for workers and the poor. In Rerum novarum he emphasized the rights of workers to form unions and earn good wages long before these were mainstream positions in the United States.

He's being disrespectful to veterans in a variety of ways, but the thing that really gets me is Veterans Day started out as "Armistice Day." It was explicitly about peace, never "victory." They were celebrating the fact that the war was over, not that it was won.

Hey, the NDP haven’t done much to advocate for social democratic solutions either. Mulcair’s influence still seems to loom over the party policy wise. I hope that changes.

He’s talking about a new crown Corp essentially to build the homes as well. I’d say it’s a mix of market and non-market policy solutions. No way the conservatives would ever suggest to start a home building entity owned by the gov.

I heard $25B in financing which usually means low interest loans. Not exactly a hand out but cheaper financing.

A government under seven (7) different investigations for corruption just introduced a bill that would bring more corporate money into politics.

This is not normal.

Corporate leaders are obsessing over GDP per capita.

But, if you look at just about any number that would meaningfully tell you how well our economy is doing, Canada does better than the U.S.

Poilievre’s Costed Platform Finally Drops Pierre Poilievre released his long-awaited costed platform just days before Canadians head to the polls.

This has to be one of the most unserious plans I've ever seen. If this guy get elected we are doomed.

This is a nice spot in downtown Ottawa. I travelled there a few years back. I took some time to enjoy the public art and sat to drink a coffee in that plaza. A very nice use of space!

The Conservative plan is out and, ooof, is this costing a disaster.

There's a whole bunch of phantom revenues booked here, and the GST housing pledge is costed at under $2B. Given their proposed eligibility criteria, it should be more in the 4-6B range.

Why GDP per capita doesn’t measure Canada’s true economic health GDP per capita distorts Canada’s economic story. Population growth and inequality skew the numbers – and the policy conversation.

A good set of facts and arguments to have on hand when someone pulls out that "but our per capita GDP is shrinking!"...

Because while a zero debt to GDP ratio isn't a particular goal in itself*, and although I accept line graphs don't need to start at zero, I do think that plus a bit of history is helpful in some cases.

* Given which I don't see why a constantly declining debt to GDP ratio should be a policy goal.

His book Values has a lot of connection to Catholic social teaching on the economy and now Mr. Carney reveals his inspiration behind his work. At a time when moral leadership is in short supply, Canada has a leader that can step up.

These polls are pretty inaccurate. We had one telling us in Vernon to vote ndp 2 elections ago and the Liberal candidate was by far the strongest progressive and came second. A lot of people I spoke to, mistakenly switched their vote.
