South African latecomer Smith hopes to inspire others to take up his sport Three years ago, Matt Smith had never strapped on a pair of cross-country skis. On Friday, the South African lined up alongside the world’s best at the Winter Olympics, driven by a belief that it is never too late to do something you love and a desire to put the sport on the map back home.

It’s taken years for the city to close a tiny gap in this 65-km public trail. The trouble? A 110-year-old private golf course lies in the way Toronto has finally decided to expropriate part of the Weston Golf and Country Club, a private course that has been open since 1915.

Thanks @alyshah.bsky.social for calling out the Weston Golf & Country Club's resistance to the Mid-Humber Gap. One golf course has no right to veto 1000s of residents & trail users who want this trail which is also a key part of the Loop Trail. #BikeTO #WalkTO #TOpoli www.thestar.com/news/gta/it-...

Well, I have to say, it was a very easy, swift journey, and, the station announcements were in English and French; #eglintoncrosstown #lrt #Toronto Avenue Road to Bayview Avenue (Leaside) in about 5 minutes.

Clarence ‘Taffy’ Abel: A pioneering US Olympic hockey star who hid his Indigenous identity to play in the NHL Despite being a foundational figure in American hockey, Taffy Abel – who hid his Ojibwe heritage so he could pass as white – has been largely erased from national memory.

On the ice: a fearsome NHL enforcer and Olympic silver medalist.

Off the ice: a quiet man forced to hide his #Indigenous identity.

As #WinterOlympics start this weekend, hockey pioneer Clarence “Taffy” Abel deserves to be remembered 🏒

Ski under NA’s busiest highway (401) at Don Valley Golf Club; a walk from York Mills subway. Great trails. Met Drake & entourage, walking his dog there, once.

Baffin Island caribou population growth ‘incredibly good news' Newspaper of record for Nunavut, and the Nunavik territory of Quebec

“Incredibly good news” for caribou on Baffin Island 🦌

After a major collapse a decade ago, the herd has grown to more than 48,000 animals — a nearly ten-fold recovery.

A hopeful reminder that community-led conservation and good science can help wildlife rebound.

Bike delivery riders work extremely hard in weather like this; tip well, these are key times when they can garner extra funds. If out there driving, take it slow and watch your sightlines. Try to order from “local”, independent places. In weather like this their walk in traffic really goes down.
