Create a live USB of Pop!_OS and try it out, see how you like it. While you are investigating, go get a removable drive and copy all your documents, emails, passwords, mp3s etc first your eventual move to Linux. My suggestion is to install Linux on a separate drive from Windows. Don’t partition!

Okay, do you have a pal with another computer? Download etcher.io so you can create a live ISO of www.linuxmint.com once you boot into mint on your unhappy MacBook Pro, it will allow you access your laptop drive so you can copy it to an external drive.

Elementary OS is a great first Linux. Lots of training wheels in place, with a fairly new Linux kernel. They have a robust “are you sure you want to do this?” ecosystem, and a nice bunch of elementaryOS specific apps. You will want to explore Flathub.org for more app options

You could go full Linux and use a VM if you need to return to Apple's garden if you need something specific. I am in the same boat right now: I need a specific piece of software that I only have a Windows .exe installer for.

my advice is to not mess with the UI too much at the beginning. Try this to start: open the terminal and type at the green prompt:

neofetch

It should come up with a display about your PC. Neofetch comes preinstalled on Linux Mint :)
