Hailstones may get bigger as the climate warms β€” bringing higher insurance costs Hail has caused higher damage costs in the U.S. this year than hurricanes and floods put together. Research suggests climate change will make hailstones larger.

Boulder and Utrecht, Netherlands, are twins in land area, similar universities, distance to similar sized major cities, Denver & Amsterdam, both extremely livable. One difference: density. Utrecht 9440/sq-mi, Boulder half that at 4112/sq-mi. Plenty of room if done right.

What is the relative contribution of observational uncertainty to the overall uncertainty? Are there specific phenomena where obs uncertainty plays a bigger role? Anything involving the deep ocean comes to mind.

Radiosondes on weather balloons are essential for collecting data from the upper atmosphere for accurate forecasting. Due to the mass firing at NOAA, the NWS doesn’t have enough people to launch balloons. 🎈

Accurate weather forecasts save lives.

Your regular reminder that the US air & water pollution laws passed in the 60s & 70s -- and the elaborate federal bureaucracy created to administer them -- constitute one of the most successful gov't interventions in history. WILDLY successful. The envy of the world.

All NWS services: data, forecasts, radar, satellite, IT infrastructure, costs each American taxpayer $4/yr. Less than a latte. And each person gets back 73 x $4 = $292 a year in value for that service.

I think that’s a pretty good deal.

Symmetry also comes from physics like in hexagonal basalt columns. Can we distinguish between physics and biology in hexagonal beehives and other creature constructions?

Fascinating. Mathematics is pattern and symmetry in addition to numbers. I am struck by the symmetry of Acheulean vs Oldowan tools. Does this say something about early human mathematical development?

Danny Hudson: "Olive oil and water droplets." Picture showing droplets with a range of sizes.

Like oil/water droplets, water/air cloud droplets range in size, 1-100ΞΌm. Challenging to measure and model, uncertainty in cloud droplet size distribution cascades to uncertainty in regional and global rainfall and climate change projections.
