I do think there is some like...morale boosting in doing a thing like No Kings. It shows you aren't along in feeling like this is all a huge terrible mess, and maybe gets you meeting people to try and change that. I just hope that's happening and it's not just kind of a circle jerk.

Like what was the core, simple, direct policy ask of "No Kings"? Does it have one? If it's just "we don't really like Donald Trump and the current admin" well we have like a year before anything can even BEGIN to happen about that. Can we do anything in the meantime?

Look, I'm glad people are organising these protests, but something more, and coherent, needs to come from it other than "look at all the people!" and social media posts of the most creative signs for it to amount to anything.

When a huge amount of congressional seats in the US are just safe fiefdoms it's really hard to hold anyone's feet to the fire via peaceful, nebulous protest.

Submission: I did a thing.

Reviewer: Too bad itโ€™s not the thing I imagined while half-reading your abstract.

Revision: What a coincidence, it is now.

COME TO OUR CONFERENCE!

Lots of people work on medicines data: researchers; but also "medicines optimisation" teams, using data to directly improve NHS care; and teams who build data tools. These clans rarely meet... Until now! Join us, Dec 10th, in Oxford.

Ezra Klein Is Worried โ€” but Not About a Radicalized Left
โ€˜Theyโ€™re failing and rethinking nothing.โ€™

Ezra Klein Is Worried โ€” but Not About a Radicalized Left โ€˜Theyโ€™re failing and rethinking nothing.โ€™

But I hold to the view I did describe, which is that there was an almost delight in engagement, a sense that disagreement could be the start of something โ€” even if it was only to disagree for the people on your own side.

I think the left did not adopt that particular attitude. The left was more likely for quite some time to try to keep someone like Kirk or Ben Shapiro from speaking on campus than to happily debate with them and do the reverse โ€” which is like, โ€œCan you do a speaking tour of evangelical churches?โ€ Can you actually go into the places you feel are most hostile to you and treat that as an interesting place to begin a conversation, even if only to sharpen your own arguments?

Douthat: I wanted to ask you on exactly that point, do you think that thereโ€™s anyone on the left who does that kind of thing? Itโ€™s almost the bunker that progressivism has built for itself, that itโ€™s hard to imagine someone doing that.

Does Klein earnestly believe the reason you don't see progressives tour conservative evangelical churches to defend abortion or some such is that progressives are dispositionally less interested in debate and civil discourse than the right? Genuinely? www.nytimes.com/2025/09/18/o...

In addition to being truly a giant in the field, Drummond also is the source for one of my favorite 2 slide transitions I've ever put in a talk. It shows the rapid change in sentiment on clinical trial registration in the early 2000s (in the wake of the Paroxetine scandal).

I'd also like to add, in addition to those things Steve over here mentioned, Mr. Kirk was also armed with literally millions of dollars of backing for his organisation since he was like 17.

Great blog by @ndevito1.bsky.social on his UKRI metascience project, which Iโ€™m honoured to join, helping authors share their code to minimum best practice standards with @bmj.com.

Funny enough I am an author on both. Gotta walk the walk.
